The were 11 time gaps between the teams, which were less than

an hour, the smallest of which was only three minutes between four

sets of teams. The biggest gap was over 43 hours between the

Austrian Handcycle team and the two person mixed Team RAD.

The gap between the winning Team Beaver Creek - Vail and the

last place Team RAD was over 6 days. This was more than twice

the time range between the first and last solo finishers.

Solo winner Wyss' time was faster than the last two teams.

The top two teams were more than twice as fast as the slowest

solo rider.

Enduro riders had 37 control points (time stations) where they could

officially log time off their bikes. I did much math calculating

their new average speeds based upon their off bike times at the

previous time station. If an Enduro rider won a time station after

stopping at the previous station, I have made note of this in the far

right column of my spreadsheet. Obviously Enduro riders should have

faster on-the-bike speeds than Traditional riders, and this is seen in

that Enduro riders won the majority (42 out of 57) of the time stations.

17 men (including 3 DNFs) won time stations. Only 3 (Kaldy,

Armstrong, & Boethling) out of the 17 finishers failed to

win a stage. The first two riders to reach Atlantic City

(Wyss & Valsesia) only won one time station each, but Wyss

had the most race leads - 18 including the last 16. I was

surprized that rookie and the last rider to drop out (with

just 357 miles to go) Mitch Lesack won 4 time stations. Two

of these were after stops (7:30 & 2:47) proving that time off

the bike increases on-the-bike speed.

Race leads is RAAMs version of the Tour de France's yellow jersey. With

57 time stations, a RAAM rider has more opportunities to be leading

through a time station than a Tour rider has to win a stage.

Based upon time station data alone, the RAAM lead changed 15 times, but

the number is probably much higher since lead changes often occur between

time stations especially the first few days before things get really

spread out. At TS #16 in Pagosa Springs, CO, Knaus took the lead after

Robic dropped out, but it never showed up because Baloh passed Knaus for

the lead before the next time station in South Fork, CO. The lead changed

8 times in 8 time stations from #18-25. The first and third riders (Wyss &

Biasiolo) only won 3 time stations, yet they had the majority (35 out of 57)

of race leads.
