Only 10 men have made this prestigious list. Of the 22 crossings,
Kish has the most with 4. Fourney, Fasching, Tatrai, and Secrest
each have 3. Only 2 rookies made the list. Robic is the newest entry
in 2004. Every name on the list is a RAAM winner. The RAAM
winners who did not make the list are Haldeman, Spilauer, Clavedetscher,
and Larsen. Only two riders (Boyer & Secrest both in 1985) made the
list without using current day aerodynamic handlebars and wheels. Makes
you wonder what Boyer could have done had he returned as a RAAM
veteran with better equipment.

15 Allen Larsen 2003
16 Jure Robic 2004
17 Michael Trevino 2004

A good indication of just how fast a certain year is how many riders
go under 9 days. The record for this was set in 1992 and 1999 when 5
riders finished in under 9 days both of these years.

Of the 35 crossings, Kish has the most with 7, Tatrai has 5, Fasching
has 4, and Fourney & I each have 3. Six non-winners made the list.

In comparing the over 14 mph versus the sub 9 day crossings, clearly
the over 14 mph list is more prestigious as only 10 (compared to 17)
men made the list, and they are all RAAM winners. On a fast year,
several men can finish in under 9 days, but few of them go over 14 mph.
Using the 2004 RAAM distance of 2,958.5 miles would yield a finishing
time of 8:19:19. In 2004, both Robic & Trevino went sub 9 day, but
only Robic went over 14 mph.

3,024 miles is the exact distance that a 14 mph average speed would produce an exact
9 day crossing. 6 RAAM's from 1983 - 1988 have been longer than this. The longest
route was 3,170 miles in 1983 because the course had to add bonus mileage to go through
defending champion Lan Haldeman's hometown of Harvard, IL. Good thing that he won
again that year. Does anybody know who's idea this was? Could it have been ABC TV's?
They covered the first five races which aired on Wide World of Sports. Here are the exact
distances:

1983 - 3,170 miles
1984 - 3,047
1985 - 3,120
1986 - 3,107
1987 - 3,127
1988 - 3,073

WHY did these long routes end? If an over 5,000 kilometer route was used again, at least
the new flat 12 Day, 2 Hour official finisher time barrier would be closer to the old 48 hour
rule as winning times would most likely be well over 9 days.

Only two people ever finished in over 9 days, but still had average speeds over 14 mph:
Boyer &Secrest both in 1985. With the help of better equipment (aerodynamic handlebars &
wheels), Secrest later rode two sub 9 days crossings, but poor Boyer never made the sub 9 day
list, but at least he made the more prestigious over 14 mph list!

ranked Boyer and Beerer didn't use aerodynamic handlebars & wheels
which are widely available today. In 1993, female Rookie-of-the-Year
Muffy Ritz (only woman on the list) had a much faster speed than male
Rookie-of-the-Year Scott Sturtz. Ten of the names on the list are
RAAM winners.

Of the 25 solo RAAMs, only 3 years (1982, 1999, & 2004) had no women starters. 4 years (1983, 1996, 2002, & 2003) had no women finishers. This means that only 18 years have women winners been crowned. There was only one woman winner/finisher in 1989, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2005, & 2006. There was only one woman starter in 1983, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, & 2006. The biggest solo women's starting fields were 7 in 1987 and 6 in 1986, 1988, & 1990. The biggest solo women's finishing fields were 3 in 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1990-1992, & 1994. In recent years, the numbers have dropped off perhaps as a result of Seana Hogan's dominance in the 1990's. Also in the early years, there were no women's teams to draw away potential solo entries.

Both Fasching's & Kish's placings & finishing times in the 2004 RAAM
lowered both their average placings and average finishing times.
Kish has the most solo RAAM finishes with 19, and I have the second
most with 8. My averaging place and finishing time are now both closer
to Fasching's than Kish's.

These are statistics for solo RAAM riders with 5 or more finishes and no
DNF's. I would liked to have included Tatrai and Hogan but they both have
one DNF. How would I have included their DNF's with a proper justifiable
penalty for not finishing? The placing is overall among both solo men and
women riders. Kish finished behind 3 women in his 1985 rookie RAAM and
behind one woman in 1989. In 1997, Peter Pop finished 4th among the men,
but 6th overall. Similarly in 2001, Mark Patten finished 4th among the men,
but 5th overall.

The solo field peaked at 39 riders in 1988, and has stayed between 18-29 since 1995. The # of team entrants column is a rider count, not the # of teams. Starting in 1989, the team field peaked at 70 riders in 1996, dipped to 18 riders in 1999, and with the new 8 person corporate teams, reached a new peak of 122 riders in 2006. The 24 Hour Corporate Challenge teams are not included in 2005 or 2006.

The team field 'caught' the solo field in 1992 (both having 28 entrants), moved way ahead of the solo's in the mid 1990's, dipped below the solo's by one rider in 1999, and have been increasing their lead ever since.

Starting out with just 4 riders in 1982, the total field increased every year to 44 in 1989. After a slight drop to 31, it peaked at 95 in 1994. Dropping to 37 in 1999, it has rebounded nicely to a new peak of 151 in 2006.

14 riders have ridden over 14,000 miles. This is the equavalent of finishing almost 5 solo RAAMs. Only 2 riders (Chew & Fasching) on the top 14 list have never dropped out. With his 5th finish (out of 10 starts) in 2006, Fabio Biasiolo has moved from 7th up to 4th on the list with 21,153 solo RAAM miles. Although well short of 14,000 miles, George Thomas is on the list because he has the most team miles, and no DNFs.

Two and Four person team riders have the solo RAAM distance divided equally by 2 and 4. Riders on the list with additional non-RAAM transcontinental mileage are Haldeman, Secrest, & Breedlove. Riders who might have made the list had I included their non-RAAM transcontinental miles are Pete Penseyres and Susan Notorangelo. 'Slow' PAC Tours don't count.

Bold face text means the records were broken/set or established in the most recent (2006) RAAM.
Two more solo records worth mentioning. In 1990 outside of RAAM, 1987 RAAM winner Michael Secrest rode the only under 8 day crossing. His time of 7:23:16 on a 2,915 mile course yielded a 15.24 mph average speed for the second fastest crossing ever. Rob Kish won the 1992 RAAM in 8:03:11 on a 2,911 mile course producing a 14.91 mph average speed for the third fastest crossing ever. Bold face indicates records either broken or established in the 2006 RAAM.
