1991 DIRTY DOZEN RESULTS The 9th Annual Dirty Dozen was held on Saturday, December 15th. 17 riders [including 10 rookies] rode on a cold [high Temp. of 32 degrees F] partly sunny day. 11 riders scored points. Max Bergholz & I exchanged the lead several times until Gunnar Shogren took it over for good after the 8th hill up Sycamore St. to Mt. Washington. Rob flatted at the Highland Park Reservoir (the DD start/finish until we move it to the brand-new Bud Harris Cycling Track on Washington Blvd. in 1999). Jay Downs dropped out after the 3rd hill. After the 6th hill, Ken Novak & Bob Perkins crashed at the Pittsburgh Power {owned by Franco Harris} National Cycle League (NCL) office, and dropped out. Ice crashed Shogren as he was climbing up the 7th hill (Suffolk St.). Wedged between Shogren & Bob Gottlieb on Canton Ave., I crashed my first attempt up it. Pittsburgh Pro Bikes mechanic Cory Hruska convinced me to do the Race Across AMerica (RAAM), and was on my Chew Crew the first year I did it in 1994. Thanks to Cory's girlfriend Michelle who rode support with my father Hal in the "Greenhouse". This was Joe Papp's first DD. He would go on to win the ACA Criterium Championships 4 consecutive years, and race pro before getting busted for using and selling performance enhancing drugs after which he became a big advocate for anti-doping to clean up the sport of cycling, and to keep himself out of jail/prison.
